Do you like pitching out there? Three out of the four affiliates won, and the lone defeat was a 1-0 loss. The four clubs combined to allow five runs, with San Antonio throwing a shutout to kick off… The San Diego Padres and El Paso Padres played out a 1-0 victory over four affiliates, with three teams allowing five runs. Pedro Avila had three scoreless innings, striking out five while only allowing two hits. Reiss Knehr logged his fourth win of the season with three innings of one-hit ball and four strikeouts. Brett Sullivan slugged a pair of doubles and scored two runs, raising his average to.298 and OPS to.853 in the process. Jackson Wolf delivered San Antonio’s second straight sublime southpaw start, holding Frisco at bay for six innings with only two hits and two walks against eight strikeouts. Yorman Rodriguez, the designated hitter in his return to San Antonio after beginning the season in El Paso, also went deep for his fourth home run in the third inning. The TinCaps followed the lead of the rest of the organization with a strong pitching performance, but were led by Wayne Wayne Noland.

Prospect Watch: El Paso bullied Las Vegas once again, dominating with both offense and pitching. On the mound, Pedro Avila got things started with three scoreless innings, striking out five while only allowing two hits. It was a nice start to June for the veteran righty and hopefully, the continuation of a trend toward improving. After posting a 12.36 ERA in 19.2 innings across six appearances in April, Avila cut it to 7.20 in five appearances that totaled just 10 innings in May. Avila came into the game with a brutal 18:26 strikeout-to-walk ratio. … First out of the bullpen was Reiss Knehr, who logged his fourth win of the season with three innings of one-hit ball and four strikeouts. Knehr has mirrored his usual role with the Padres this year in El Paso, making long appearances out of the bullpen, and has thrived to the tune of a 1.19 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 29.1 innings to go along with a 3.99 ERA. … Back with the Chihuahuas after his first tour of duty in the big leagues, Brett Sullivan slugged a pair of doubles and scored two runs, raising his average to .298 and OPS to .853 in the process. The 29-year-old Sullivan threw out 29 percent of would-be base stealers with the Padres, compared to a 33 percent mark with El Paso. … Preston Tucker had yet another big night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, driving in three runs while scoring three of his own. The veteran outfielder is batting .357 with a 1.180 OPS in 129 at-bats for El Paso in 2023, his first season in the Padres organization. The 1.180 OPS ranks second in the PCL.
Prospect Watch: The Missions shut the door on Frisco to improve their record to 26-22, the best of any affiliate in the Padres system, and claim first place in the Texas League South Division. Jackson Wolf delivered San Antonio’s second straight sublime southpaw start, holding Frisco at bay for six innings with only two hits and two walks against eight strikeouts. The 6-foot-7 Wolf, a fourth-round pick by the Padres in 2021, recorded his second consecutive quality start, following up six one-run innings on May 26 against Amarillo. … Going from the crafty lefty to the fireballing righty, Justin Lopez picked up his third hold of the season with two innings of one-hit ball. Lopez is likely a familiar name to longtime Padres prospect followers as he debuted in the system as a shortstop in 2017, the position he played until midway through the 2022 season when he went to Peoria to begin the conversion to pitcher. After going 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA in nine appearances (five in Peoria, four with Lake Elsinore) last year, Lopez reported to San Antonio for 2023, and so far the results have been impressive with a 1.69 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16 innings of work for the Missions. … All San Antonio needed was a pair of big flies to make the difference and they got one from Tirso Ornelas, who went deep for his fourth home run of the season in the third inning. Ornelas now has a .686 OPS as the hulking outfielder continues to strive to improve his power in Double-A. … Also going deep in the third inning was Yorman Rodriguez,the designated hitter in his return to San Antonio after beginning the season in El Paso. Nominally a catcher, Rodriguez has also seen time at first base and third base in the 2023 season.
Prospect Watch: The TinCaps followed the lead of the rest of the organization with a strong pitching performance, but a tough night at the plate against a South Bend pitching staff led by 2022 ninth-rounder Connor Noland doomed Fort Wayne’s chances. For the TinCaps, Adam Mazur enjoyed one of the finest starts in his young career that has already been impressive, throwing six shutout innings, striking out three, and allowing four hits. The Padres’ choice with the 53rd overall draft pick in 2022, Mazur is 0-0 with a 1.45 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 31 innings through seven starts in 2023, his first professional season. He’s allowed just five walks and opponents are hitting .200 against him. … Next up was Keegan Collett, who fired two scoreless innings to start off the month of June. After logging an 11.57 ERA in three appearances in April, Collett posted a 5.91 mark in seven appearances (two starts) in May. … Fort Wayne’s only two-hit performance of the evening belonged to Marcos Castañon, who smacked a pair of singles to raise his average to .265. The 24-year-old UC Santa Barbara product has five home runs while posting a .750 OPS in 162 at-bats for the TinCaps this season. … Top prospect Jackson Merrill went 1-for-5 with a single to extend his hitting streak to five games. The 2021 first-round pick is batting .409 (9-for-22) in the span.
Prospect Watch: Lake Elsinore is the nexus of excitement in the system, and tonight was no exception as Robby Snelling gave the fans much to cheer for in improving his record to 4-0. The 19-year-old southpaw struck out eight in five innings to propel the Storm to the victory and now boasts a 1.23 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 36.2 innings of work while only walking 12. … Picking up his first hold of the season, Carter Loewen continued a strong campaign with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. The Abbotsford, British Columbia, native – home to the San Diego Gulls’ AHL rivals the Abbotsford Canucks – came to the Padres after the 2020 draft following a career at the University of Hawaii that was equal parts brilliance and frustration due to injuries. Back on track with the Storm, Loewen has a 1-1 record and 2.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in nine innings of work. … The star of the game offensively was Graham Pauley, who slugged a home run and a double, driving in three runs to power the Storm offense. Pauley, a 22-year-old Duke product, is batting .308 with a .874 OPS in 156 at-bats for Lake Elsinore in 2023. … Also with a double and a pair of runs batted in was Charlis Aquino, who went 2-for-3 while batting ninth for the Storm. Aquino, a native of the Dominican Republic, is batting .256 with a .574 OPS in 82 at-bats this season. … It wouldn’t be the daily without an update on phenom Ethan Salas, who started at DH and went 0-for-3 with a walk. The performance lowered Salas’ average to .500 and his OPS to 1.292 to begin his professional career. He might be human after all.
