San Antonio Man Accused of Renting Apartment in Woman's Name
A fake Texas ID and a LinkedIn profile in her name helped crack the case, records show. Henry Bustillos, a 40-year-old San Antonio man, is accused of using a woman's stolen identity, including an altered Texas driver's license and a Social Security card, to rent an apartment at Pearl Park Apartments in her name. The alleged victim discovered her personal information was being used to apply for apartments and open accounts in her own name in July. She also found a LinkedIn profile using her name alongside someone else's photo, identified as Bustillo's, and images on the account showed him dressed as a woman. Bustillon is being held on a $20,000 bond and faces a state jail felony charge of tampering with a governmental record. Other identity-theft schemes linked to apartment rentals have also surfaced around the country. Florida lawmakers have moved to address such fraud directly, with a new state law creating a third-degree felony for those who knowingly use false identity information, counterfeit documents or another person's identity to obtain and take possession of a rental home.
