A planned sports pavilion at the base of the Tower of the Americas has passed a design review — and got a high-profile name.

The Historic and Design Review Commission Wednesday approved the design for the Red & Charline McCombs Community Court, a covered sports court with a basketball focus set to rise at Hemisfair's Tower Park. With $1.8 million in funding from the McCombs family and Spurs Give, the San Antonio Spurs' charitable group, construction is expected to kick off this spring. Hemisfair would pave over the pond that was built on the site in 1988.

Local business magnate Red McCombs passed away in 2023. His wife, Charline, passed in 2019.

In a press release, McCombs Enterprises CEO and managing partner Marsha Shields said her parents' involvement in the city's civic and sports spheres is well represented by the new court.

"From their leadership roles with HemisFair '68, to helping bring the Spurs to San Antonio, my parents were always focused on lifting their community," she said. "Their legacy will continue in the Hemisfair District with this brand new community court."

Hemisfair CEO Andres Andujar said the proposed court is aligned with the community's feedback for more public recreation at Tower Park.

"We are grateful to the McCombs family and Spurs Give," Andujar said. "Through the creation of the Tower Park vision and use plan, we heard from the community that a shaded basketball court would be used and loved, and we can deliver thanks to the funders' dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities for our residents."

As Business Journal reported last month when the project was under design review, project leaders wrote that the court would take inspiration from the World's Fair's pavilions, name-checking the IBM Pavilion.

Mexican architecture firm Gomez Vasquez International is leading the court's design. Construction is expected to finish in the spring of 2025.
