'A Star Without a Star': A Texas native’s journey to honor a Black actress
Juanita Moore was the third Black person to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, receiving the nod for her role in the late 1950’s movie "Imitation of Life." Actor and filmmaker Kirk Kelleykahn led a campaign to secure the recognition of Juanita Moore, the third Black actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the 1950s for her role in "Imitation of Life." Despite efforts to secure a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Moore for decades, efforts were unsuccessful. The documentary "A Star Without a Star: The Untold Juanita Mo Story" was funded by nearly 20 years and nearly $500,000 through the efforts of Kelleykhan and his production team. The film, which includes interviews with Moore, Sidney Poitier, and other Hollywood icons, follows Moore's journey from being a chorus girl to roles in over 70 films and TV shows. It also explores racism and typecasting during Hollywood's Golden Age.
