Can you renew your Texas registration without an emissions test?
There are exemptions and waivers. Here's what you need to know. Despite efforts by local officials in San Antonio to halt emissions inspections, the requirement remains in place. A new emissions inspection program will begin on November 1, allowing drivers in major Texas metros to renew their vehicle registration without needing an emissions test. This is a federal mandate under the Clean Air Act and incorporated into state law. However, exceptions include vehicles that are more than 24 years old or vehicles that use diesel or motorcycles. Texas also allows individuals to apply for individual vehicle waiver if they have spent at least $600 on "emissions-related repairs". However, the state requires an extension only once every other testing cycle, so drivers can pass the test every other year.
