San Antonio is one of the most historic cities in Texas and is very much worth visiting. While San Antonio is quite expensive, it is possible to spend a week there for less than $1,000 by taking advantage of San Antonio's free attractions. It is a popular city to visit with around 32 million tourists flocking to the city every year to enjoy the many things to see and so in San Antonio.

San Antonio is home to some of Texas's most iconic landmarks — not least The Alamo. Here's how to spend a week there on a budget of $1,000 or even less.

Accommodation for six nights will take around half the budget, leaving a daily budget of around $65

San Antonio has a metropolitan population of 2.6 million (a city population of around 1.4 million) and is one of the oldest cities in the region. It was first founded by the Spanish as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718. In 1731, San Antonio became the first chartered civil settlement in what would become Texas.

Notable attractions in San Antonio include the Spanish Missions, the Riverwalk, the Tower of the Americas, the Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and more. Some museums and parks are free — although a $1,000 budget will limit some of the other attractions.

Reckoning on a seven-day week, a $1,000 budget allows for a daily budget of $142. The largest single expense is the accommodation; six nights of accommodation in downtown San Antonio can easily cost more than $1,000. One of the cheaper accommodation options in downtown San Antonio is La Villita Inn, with rates varying but sometimes dropping to around $79 per night. For six nights, that works out to $474 — about half of the week's budget.

Assuming one is driving to San Antonio, then parking at La Villita Inn costs an additional $10 per day. Bringing the total parking/accommodation expense to $544. There is no breakfast served at this residence.

This leaves only around $456 or a daily budget of $65 for food, transport, and attractions. Fortunately, visitors can potentially cut out transportation fees as most of San Antonio's attractions are within walking distance (e.g. the Riverwalk is a 12-minute walk or 0.5 miles and The Alamo is a 17-minute walk or 0.7 miles).

To keep within the budget, there is likely to be little to no money for attractions as most of the remaining budget is needed for food (unfortunately, there are few self-catering accommodation options within the budget).

An alternative is to stay further out of the city and to book accommodation with breakfast and free parking for the same price. For example, the Rodeway Inn costs about $324 for six nights with breakfast and free parking, and it has a swimming pool (but it is 7.5 miles from the city center).
