Most tweens could only dream of being honored by City Council once in their lifetimes, but Thursday was the second go-round for Kids Baking Champion Lila Smethurst.

An Alamo City native and student at North East ISD, Lila was recognized before Council in Feburary for her fighting spirit on the Food Network "Kids Baking Championship," which had just aired its semifinal episode.

After receiving an engraved cutting board and box of cookies from Councilman Marc Whyte, Lila went on to win the entire competition.

"It must have been tough keeping that secret, but we are so excited for you," Whyte said Thursday, when the council applauded her achievement.

The young baking star was congratulated by council members including Manny Palaez, who showed video from a baking lesson with Lila and called her "one of the smartest young women I've ever met in my life."

She confirmed that she used the prize money from the show for two kittens, which she named Baroness Valentina Von Schneena Bertinelli-Smethurst and Baron Dufflepuff Goldman-Smethurst — or Duff and Val for short, after the competition's hosts Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman.

The Bexar County Commissioners Court, too, gave props to Lila. That was March 26, when she announced a sweepstakes benefiting the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The winner gets the opportunity to bake alongside the Kids Baking Champion, and Councilman Palaez made it clear that he recommends the experience.

"You've never walked into a house that smells better than the Smethurst house," he said.
