The San Antonio-born-and-bred punk band Butthole Surfers have just released a teaser for their upcoming documentary — Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt.
Directed by Tom Stern with full collaboration from the band, the full-length dive into the Butthole Surfers features interviews from a star-studded roster, including Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore, Henry Rollins, Ice T, Flea, Dean Ween, Eric Andre, King Buzzo, Al Jourgensen, Richard Linklater and more.
“I started documenting the Butthole Surfers in 1986 at CBGB’s as a film student when I checked out a camera from NYU, and I have been collaborating with them ever since,” Stern said in the movie’s press release.
He wants the movie to speak to the continued influence the band has had on punk countercultures in the years since their takeoff.
“It will be irreverent and funny, but also sincere and heartfelt at times as we get these post-punk rock legends to look back on their strange and extraordinary lives.”
The band was unofficially formed in San Antonio in the late-1970’s when singer Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary met at Trinity University. The band officially signed with the Alternative Tentacles label in 1981.
After that, they climbed the ranks of punk rock to become one of the scene’s most influential counter-culture acts. To point, Kurt Cobain named Pee Pee the Sailor as a leading influence of Nirvana’s sound.
“This won’t be a hagiography,” Stern writes. “We will present the hole truth and nothing butt, warts and all: Sex, drugs, rock and roll, the beautiful, the ugly, and the weird.”
