Trumpets or turntables? The cost of access to music causes some to get creative
Instrument costs are rising yearly, but there are other options to make music. The cost of access to music is increasing, with instruments prices increasing by nearly 30% over the past two years. This has led to increased repair costs, increased instrument costs, and increased the cost of instruments to put in the hands of students. Joe Muñoz, executive director of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), attributes these increases to the Trump administration's increased tariff rates from 2024 to 2026. However, while educators and parents are looking for solutions, DJing may be the answer to help beginners break into music. Dub Academy in Austin has seen consistent growth over the last 15 years due to access and the ability to make income almost immediately by DJing.
