19-year-old Jace Andrew Mendoza was set to graduate from Clark High School on Monday, instead, his family had to organize a memorial motorcycle ride for him on Sunday because Jace died following a motorcycle accident on Loop 410, May 27th.
“We’ll be riding from here to his house to celebrate his graduation,” said Florencio Segura, the uncle of 19-year-old Jace Mendoza.
Segura said Sunday’s ride was bittersweet because they were celebrating Jace’s graduation from Clark High School, but Jace only rode with them in spirit.
“That was his love, that was his passion. He’s been riding bikes since he could, you know since he was able to. Before he even drove, he was on motorcycles and little motor scooters and different stuff,” said Segura.
Eva Lin had been on a group ride with Jace since he got the bike he was riding when the accident happened. The San Antonio Police Department is still investigating what caused Jace to collide with a vehicle on Loop 410 near the Vance Jackson exit when the accident happened on May 27th.
Lin said Jace always wore a helmet and from what she saw, he also took all the road precautions necessary.
“He is like a safe rider, uses his turn signals, makes sure he checks his blind spots and makes sure that he goes in the lanes and not block other cars and things like that,” said Lin.
Jace’s family told us the ride to his graduation party was primarily to honor his memory, but they also wanted to use the ride to remind motorcyclists and drivers of the importance of taking all safety precautions when sharing the road.
“It’s going to be a chill ride, nobody should be on the shoulder, nobody should be lane splitting, nobody should be doing nothing crazy. Be safe, everyone communicates,” said one of the organizers.
Lin says even when motorcyclists take all precautions, drivers in cars need to do their part too to help keep motorcyclists safe.
“It’s so important to check those blind spots because our little, they’re not little, but our motorcycles are pretty small compared to cars and we don’t have all that metal to protect us and so it’s really important to make sure that we’re looking out for motorcyclists because one wrong move, it can end someone’s life,” said Lin.
