City Council: Please, do right on data centers
Special use permitting appropriate for regulating development of information technology infrastructure in San Antonio. The San Antonio City Council has tasked the city's Development Services Department with creating new regulations for new data centers. Two options, one of which would support the status quo with minimal new regulations, were presented at a City Council briefing on Oct. 14. The Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and Public Citizen’s Texas Office oppose this one, arguing that it does not support it. The second option, which would require a special use permit for each new request to locate a data center in San Antonio, would allow public consultation and allow for agreements that address specific community concerns. The Aquifer alliance and Public Citizens support the second option. Six votes on Oct., when the City Council takes up this issue, will determine where San Antonio stands on regulating new data centres.
