At 7x24 Exchange, AI Data Center Growth Confronts New Realities of Power, Grid Reliability and Community Trust
From agentic AI and volatile power loads to grid disturbances and neighborhood opposition, the opening day of 7x24 Exchange's Fall 2026 Conference examined how traditional data... The data center industry's transition towards artificial intelligence is challenging some of its assumptions about infrastructure design, operational reliability and relationships with the outside world. The 7x24 Exchange Fall 2026 Conference opened in San Antonio with the theme of The Intersection of AI & Traditional Data Centers. Speakers described challenges beyond higher rack densities and greater demand for electricity, with large data center campuses becoming significant participants in grid operations rather than customers of electric utilities. Developers are finding that technical and economic arguments may no longer be enough to secure acceptance in communities where they intend to build. The keynote was delivered by AI futurist Steve Brown, who emphasized the transition from conversational AI tools to autonomous agents capable of executing complex work. Brown suggested new ways of evaluating AI infrastructure efficiency and suggested measuring useful tasks or economic outcomes relative to energy consumption. The conference also included an announcement that 7x25 Exchange would contribute $40,000 to American Red Cross disaster relief efforts supporting communities affected by wildfires, hurricanes and flooding across the US.
