Long trips make maternity care harder for South Side mothers
South Side mothers often travel across San Antonio for prenatal and maternity care. University Health’s Palo Alto Hospital is expected to open in 2027. The VIA Link, a van ride service that costs the same as the bus, operates in six designated areas on the South Side, including Palo Alto College, TAMU-SA and the Toyota campus. However, large swaths of the region do not have coverage. Many mothers cannot afford to miss work hours for maternity care, which could result in a pay cut. The service is available for pre-booking, which can be useful for appointments.
