Witte Museum Texas Food Exhibit: 1,300 Years in San Antonio

A 10-foot chicken on a stick. A 1911 chuck wagon. 1,300 years of Texas food history in one San Antonio gallery. Gather 'Round the Table: Texas Food Traditions' is on display at the Witte Museum in San Antonio until February 7, 2027 as part of the museum's centennial programming. The exhibit covers 1,300 years of food history in a 5,500-square-foot gallery, connecting foods with the places where they are grown or harvested. An interactive station allows visitors to smell eight spices associated with cultural groups cooking in Texas. The gallery includes a regional map of what Texans grow and eat, a mortar and pestle for grinding corn, and an exhibit label connecting the summer harvest with Mesoamerican cultural roots. The exhibition also includes artifacts and historic photographs.
