San Antonio researchers use AI to detect brain injuries in veterans

Three San Antonio organizations are testing whether subtle changes in language could be a marker for mild traumatic brain injuries. Researchers from UT San Antonio, the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and UT Health San Antonio are collaborating to use artificial intelligence to detect mild traumatic brain injuries in veterans. The yearlong study is supported by $200,000 in grant funding from the San Antonio Medical Foundation. If the researchers find language patterns that can be linked to cognitive functioning, the findings could lead to new clinical assessments for concussions. Current tools for diagnosing concussions, which can often go untreated, do not tell doctors how patients are functioning outside of the clinic. However, Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Health, has developed new concussion care standards emphasizing the severity of mild TBIs. Over the next year, researchers will use AI to analyze data collected at the SouthTexas VA through a separate Pentagon-funded study, which includes recording stories from veterans with mild TBA.
