Walnut Hill Elementary thriving years after tornado
There's no trace now of the storm that destroyed her classroom seven years ago. A tornado destroyed Walnut Hill Elementary in North Dallas seven years ago, leaving the school in a pile. The school's former principal, Philip Meaker, said rebuilding the school became an opportunity to experiment with a new model. Instead of reopening the neighboring Cary Middle School, which was also struggling academically, they combined it with the former Walnut High School to create an international leadership academy. The academy, which is pre-K-through-eighth-grade, is a pre-k-through school with a population of more than 60% economically disadvantaged. The transformation of the school led to a significant increase in state accountability ratings and a transformation in the school's overall academic performance.
